Carolyn
Carolyn grew up in Detroit and later studied Political Science at Loyola University in Chicago. Since her time at Loyola, she has been bouncing back and forth between Detroit and Chicago, keeping Detroit in mind as likely her ultimate destination (she has found that while loving travel and adventure, home and community mean something special to her). Carolyn has always loved the outdoors and the idea of being a farmer but long ago ruled out any farming or agriculture related work under the misconception that a city kid didn’t/couldn’t mix with the agricultural world. Around the end of her college years, she was pleasantly surprised to find that, since we all need to eat, we all desire quality of life, and we all need community (of which food is often a central focus), food and agriculture are, in fact, closely tied with urban life.
Carolyn’s future is still to be determined, but she intends to incorporate what she learns at the OFTP into her life and work in Detroit in the future. Among many things, she is interested in: education, working to strengthen farm to cafeteria programs in schools, working towards better access to affordable and quality produce in the city, strengthening community through urban gardens, or a combination or extension of any one of these interests. She is very excited to be a part of the OFTP and looks forward to everything she will be able to learn through the program’s comprehensive and hands on approach.
