Michigan StateUniversity is the oldest land
grant university in the nation. The Organic Farming Certificate
Program students will have access to heated and passive solar
greenhouses, cold storage facilities, tractor equipment, and on-campus
computing sites. The Student Organic Farm (SOF) is one of many
farms and research land plots on the MSU campus which has roughly
2000 acres of farm land surrounding campus. Classes for the program
will be held both on campus and on site at the SOF. The farm is
roughly 3 miles south of the main campus at the Horticulture Teaching
and Research Center. The SOF is 10 acres of certified organic
land, with 9,000 square feet of passive solar greenhouses (hoop
houses) and 2000 square feet of heated greenhouses. A number of
groups use the SOF. Some of the uses of the farm include the CSA,
undergraduate and graduate classes and projects, the Certificate
Program, school tours, as well as the public who are welcome as
volunteers and visitors.
